Arid Saline Wetlands

This course is designed to provide an ecological overview of the vegetation, hydrology, and soils associated with wetland and playa features found in arid landscapes of the American Southwest and includes delineation issues in arid and saline wetlands. Lectures addressing pertinent issues will be presented to introduce a series of field trips where the instructors and attendees will view and discuss arid habitats in the area. Topics to be covered include: the saline and sodic characteristics of the soils; the phreateatic, halophytic, and hydrophytic nature of the plants; zone hydrology; and, wetland characterization issues associated with the Corps of Engineers’ new Arid West Supplement to the Corps’ 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual.
