Erosion Control

Assessing Wetland Functions and Health: HGM and Other Approaches

4 Days - $850

Learn to recognize and avoid common mistakes and unscientific assumptions about wetland functions, when submitting significant nexus determinations, permit applications, mitigation proposals, and monitoring plans.  Explore the use of indicators of wetland function to help design better mitigation projects and monitoring.  Learn how to apply HGM and other rapid assessment methods appropriate to the region of the course location, to estimate services performed by local wetlands.  Gain a deeper understanding of the processes that determine functions at multiple scales.  Course participants will: visit local wetlands and practice classifying them using the hydrogeomorphic (HGM) classification; assess hydrologic, water quality, and biological functions using standardized methods; demonstrate application of these methods to various mitigation scenarios; and cover principles for selecting reference wetlands, as needed for developing rapid assessment models and function-based performance standards for restored or constructed wetlands. This course is important for resource agencies, land trusts, consultants, and others needing to understand and apply best available science to assess functions or health of natural, constructed, or restored wetlands.

The Texas course will focus on methods for assessing functions of wetlands of Texas and the Gulf Coast.

The Michigan course will focus on the use of Michigan's new rapid assessment method (MiRAM), as well as other methods applicable to the Upper Midwest.

The Florida course will focus on methods for assessing functions of wetlands in Florida and the Southwest.
