Arid West Supplement

The Corps of Engineers (Corps) is in the process of releasing a series of Regional Supplements to the 1987 Corps Wetland Delineation Manual. After peer review and a public comment period, the Regional Supplements are being implemented for one-year interim trial periods. When released, they will be required for conducting wetland delineations for Clean Water Act purposes in the affected regions. As of this writing, six of the ten planned regional supplements are available for review as Interim Supplements for field application, or in various Draft forms. The basic outline and requirements of all of the Regional Supplements have been consistent, while specific indicators and problematic situations vary by region. Within this outline, there are substantive changes regarding field indicators and process from current practice with the 1987 Manual. This seminar is designed for wetland delineators already trained in the 1987 Manual who want to get specifics on how to use the new Regional Supplements and how their fieldwork will be affected. The seminar will include background, differentiation between "regions" (especially near boundaries, which Regional Supplement should be used), explanation and comparison of changes, understanding of problematic situations, navigation of field indicators of hydric soils, examples, and opportunity for discussion. Additional information will be provided specifically on the Supplements covering the region(s) in which the announced course will be located. Participants will receive Lecture Notes, a WTI Pocket Guide to Hydric Soil Field Indicators, and a CD with the available Regional Supplements to date, and version 6.0 of the NRCS Field Indicators of Hydric Soils. Class ends at 5:00 p.m.
