The
course will focus on categorization of wetlands using the hydrogeomorphic (HGM)
classification and assessment of their hydrologic, water quality, and
biological functions and values (i.e., ecosystem services) using a new rapid
method applicable to wetlands anywhere in temperate North America. Compare
with results from alternative methods and learn not only the mechanics of
the methods, but gain a deeper understanding of processes that determine
wetland ecological services at multiple scales. Learn how to quantify
"functional lift" resulting from restoration or enhancement and use that to
inform mitigation ratios and design better wetlands as well as learn to
recognize and avoid common mistakes and unscientific assumptions when
submitting or reviewing permit applications, mitigation proposals, and
monitoring plans. This course is important for mitigation bankers,
consultants, resource agencies, land trusts, and others needing to
understand and apply best available science to assess the quality of
natural, constructed, or restored wetlands.
